• Vancouver business briefs - Earthcycle Packaging Ltd., by Joel Gebet, The Produce News, March 20, 2006
Peggi Peacock, vice president of marketing for Vancouver BC-based Earthcycle Packaging Ltd., hopes that the term "cradle-to-cradle" will soon become commonplace. Using the empty fruit bunches from Malaysian palm oil trees, the company has turned what used to be a waste product into a packaging material that is totally home-compostable. In fact, Ms. Peacock believes that Earthcycle Packaging will be the first firm in North America to offer a completely home-compostable tray, wrap and label packaging product for the produce industry. With the rising costs of petroleum and plastics, the release of its products could not have come at a better time for the numerous produce growers, packers and retailers who have expressed interest to Earthcycle in such a product, Ms. Peacock said. "We anticipated being a niche item, but the interest has been much broader in places we didn't expect," she said. "We plan to have our product being utilized by a large retailer very soon, possibly as soon as March."
